New, nationally projectable survey results released this week by The Partnership at Drugfree.org and MetLife Foundation confirmed that one in four teens have misused or abused a prescription (Rx) drug at least once in their lifetime – a 33 percent increase over the past five years. Free preview copies of educational materials that address this issue are available by visiting Journeyworks Publishing's Prescription Drug Abuse review pack page.
The study also shows:
- Almost one in four teens (23 percent) say their parents don’t care as much if they are caught using Rx drugs without a doctor’s prescription, compared to getting caught with illegal drugs.
- Almost one-third of parents (29 percent) say they believe ADHD medication can improve a child’s academic or testing performance, even if the teen does not have ADHD.
- One in six parents (16 percent) believe that using prescription drugs to get high is safer than using street drugs.
Help both teens and parents understand the real risks associated with Rx abuse with “The Dangers of Prescription Drug Abuse.” This pamphlet offers a straightforward overview of the many hazards associated with the most commonly abused Rx drugs, and challenges the misperception that using these drugs to get high is safe. Help empower parents to talk with their children about drug abuse by providing them with “Preventing Drug Use: 10 Tips for Parents and Other Adults.” These are great discussion pieces for drug education programs, school prevention programs, health educators and social service organizations.
